Looks like summer is here to stay so how to celebrate– besides pulling out the white shoes?

Tonight in the Test Kitchen at Union Market join the folks from Al Volo for a Taste of Sicily. Chef Daniele Catalani will teach attendees to make Arancini, Fettuccine Frutti di Mare and Cannoli. The event is from 6pm to 8pm and is $50. Register here.

You know we have an election coming up right? Not talking about the national circus because I. Just. Can’t. Besides, this is a local blog and we barely get a say in that mess. We do get some say in what happens here, though. There is an at-large seat on the council is up for grabs. Its current occupant Vincent Orange is facing David Garber and Robert Wright in the upcoming Democratic primary and you can listen to their ideas TONIGHT at the Ward 6 Democratic Forum at Tyler Elementary School at 10th and G Street SE  from 6:30pm too 8pm. Moderators are Denise Rolark Barnes of the Informer and Mark Seagraves of NBC4.

Congressional Cemetery Launches a monthly First Thursday Twilight Tour tonight. Tours begin at 5:30 p.m. and will be held every half an hour until 9pm. Entry is $10 and includes the tour and a glass of wine to sip as you stroll and learn about some of the cemetery’s history and residents. Learn more and register here.

Rosedale Library (1701 Gales Street NE) is offering a free Self Defense class tonight at 7pm. D’Angelo Kindard, of Advanced Sports Performancewill teach the basics of self-defense during this 90-minute session for kids, teens and adults. It’s part of DC Public Library’s Summer Reading “Go for the Gold” programming.   While you’re there you can, sign up for the Summer Reading Program. For more information, call the Library at 202-727-5012.

Friday night the Atlas Performing Arts Center presents the Sirius Quartet, four superstar strings players with precision of classical music and the energy of rock, metal, and free jazz. Tickets are $28 and the concert begins at 8pm. Get them here.

Yards Park revives its popular free Friday evening concert series with a concert by For the Win. The concerts are 6:30 to 8:30 and  have been popular with all ages. The new restrictions on bringing in alcoholic beverages are a bummer but, hey someone had to pay the bands and  it always seemed a little too good to be true to me.

Saturday is a Truck Touch in the RFK parking lot 7. Little ones can get their hands on the exciting high-tech equipment and vehicles used by District agencies. Kids can climb aboard, work the gears, and honk the horns! The event is 9am to 2pm and is free to all.

Saturday is also National Learn to Row Day, and the Capital Rowing Club is hosting an event at the Anacostia Community Boathouse (1900 M Street SE) from noon to 4PM. If you were ever interested in knowing a bit more about rowing, this is a light introduction to the sport that will cover rowing on an ergometer (rowing machine on land) as well as taking some strokes in the training barges on the water.

The Sherwood Neighborhood Volunteers have rescheduled the Spring Clean Up for this Saturday from 9am to 12pm. DO a little mulching and weeding with your neighbors to help keep the grounds and the playground in great shape.

Sunday check out the Folger’s world premiere production of Aaron Posner’s District Merchants which a variation on the Bard’s Merchant of Venice set in a post-Civil War DC. The play examines race, class and money, just like Shakespeare’s does but it also examines these issues in the context of America. Tickets are $35-$75 and the shows runs through July 3rd.
