So today is Cinco De Mayo. A holiday I enjoy mostly because I see my last name advertising Tecate and Coronas.

So hoow to spend this hopefully dry weekend?

Tonight in the Test Kitchen at Union Market learn how to brew your best coffee with the folks from Peregrine. You will  practice brewing, learn new recipes, and take home a 12oz bag of coffee. The event is $43 and is begins at 6pm. Get your tickets here.

Taffety Punk Theatre offers Pay What You Can preview tickets to it’s latest production, Phaeton. This new retelling of the Greek classic tale of Phaeton, child of a god-human union and examines the conflict between the mundane and the divine.

Friday the Miracle Theatre (a movie theatre that became a church, who sold it to another church which is turning it back into a theater) on Barracks Row officially opens with a screening of my all time favorite movie, The Princess Bride. The tale of true love, giants, revenge and ROAS’ begins at 10pm and tickets are $10. Learn more here.

The Capitol Hill Presbyterian Church, at 4th and Independence Ave, SE. is screening Kinky Boots  and will follow it with a discussion of labeling church restrooms. The screening is free and begins at 7:30 and they boast excellent popcorn.

Saturday Congressional Cemetery hosts the annual Day of the Dog celebration. It begins at 9:30am with a 5K and Fun Run. At 10am the rest of the festivities begin. Attendees can enjoy yoga, bobbing for hot dogs, an agility course, themed photo set-ups, a costume contest, and even face and paw painting. Leashed dogs are welcome and local rescue organizations will be on hand if you are looking for a new friend. Food trucks and local breweries will be selling treats for humans. Admission in free. Wave goodbye to longtime Navy Yard resident, the Display Ship Barry.  It is going  to be towed to the Philadelphia Navy Yard 6:30 am to coincide with the high tide.  The ship will be towed down the Anacostia River, down the Potomac River, on its way to Philly.

The annual Taste of 8th is Saturday from 1pm to 4pm. $20 will get you 5 tickets which you can use to purchase treats from one of the 25  participating Barracks Row businesses. You can buy your tickets in advance here.

The Capitol Hill Restoration Society hosts the Annual House and Garden Tour this weekend. It’s your chance to satisfy your nosy curiosity about some of our neighborhood’s loveliest homes. This year the focus is on the Barracks Row area including Archibald Walk. Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 this weekend and they are good for both days of the tour. Saturday the tour is from 4pm to 7pm and Sunday 12pm to 5pm. You can purchase tickets at local retailers like Hill’s Kitchen and Appalachian Spring.

The Annual Running of the Chihuahuas at  The Wharf (600 Water Street SW) on the southwest waterfront. The event runs from 1pm to 4pm. Food trucks and entertainment will be on hand for participants and spectators alike.  The races feature 96 Chihuahuas racing in groups of eight on a sixty foot “race track.” The winners take home $500 in cash and prizes. You need not BYOC (Bring Your Own Chihuhua) to attend.  All are welcome and admission is free. Learn more here.

Sunday the Capital City Symphony performs its final concert of the season. The orchestra will perform the music of Beethoven and Brahmas and will feature young violinist Lara Boschkor. Tickets are $15 to $25 (kids under 17 get in free) and the concert begins at 5pm. Get your tickets here.
