Invasion of the Body Snatchers is showing at the Hill Center Sunday at 4pm.

Not going to discuss the weather. Can’t possibly discuss the rain anymore.

Moving on to the weekend and how we will entertain ourselves.

Tonight at the Hill Center is The Life of a Poet: Conversations with Ron Charles and guest Mary Jo Bang. Charles, Washington Post Editor of Book World, will interview Bang about her life and work which will include readings. Her work has been praised for its linguistic energy, subtle imagery, and innovative technique. Known for mixing linguistic precision with more post-modern themes, Bang’s work has been frequently cast as a pioneering example of “hybrid” poetry. The discussion begins at 7pm and is free, though reservations are encouraged here.

Friday check out Transmission by playwright Gwydion Suilebhan, produced by The Welders at the Atlas Performing Arts Center. The Welders are a playwriting collective dedicated to producing the new works of its members. Transmission is a participatory “performance essay” on the viral evolution of culture from the radio age to the present. The intentionally small audience of only twenty people is seated in 1930s armchairs circled around old radios in a performance that explores the evolution of culture from the 20th through the 21st century and which is part jazz, part science lecture, and part ritual invocation. Tickets are $15 -$30 and are available here.

This week’s Friday Art Night at CHAW is Knit ‘n Sip from 7pm to9pm. All levels of knitters are welcome. All experience levels welcome. $30 per session + $10 starter ball of yarn and knitting needles.  To register, call 202.547.6839 or visit http://www.knitting101.org/

Saturday is the spring Sherwood Neighborhood Volunteers Spring Clean up/Community event at the Sherwood Recreation Center (10th and G Streets NE) from 9am to noon.  There will be weeding, mulching food, and fun. All ages are welcome. You can also stop by School Within School, (920 F Street NE) and browse their Yard Sale. Win-win.

The Lace Up for RAINN 5K, RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) is an organization which runs programs to help sexual assault survivors, educate the public, and improve sexual assault laws and policies. The race will be at Historic Congressional Cemetery at 1801 E Street SE. If you are interested in participating you can learn more here.

New Belgium Brewing Company brings its annual bike advocacy celebration, Tour de Fat back to Yards Park. The event kicks off with a bike ride at 11am (registration begins at 10am) and the fun continues all day with entertainment such as yo-yo contests, vaudeville acts, costumed bike rides, game show and performances by Los Amigos Invisibles, and Esmé Patterson. The event is free and the beers are $5. Learn more here.

Balance Gym (214 D Street SE) is hosting Capitol Hill Community Fitness Day from 9am to 3pm. They are hosting a day of activities for the whole family that they hope will motivate and inspire all. There will be classes for adults and kids as well as a moon bounce and complimentary treats. A full schedule is available here.

Local famous teen, Eastern High School 10th grader, Akilah Johnson, who just won the 2016 Doodle 4 Google contest for her “What makes me…me” entry, is the surprise special guest at this year’s Capitol Hill Night Out Art Auction which benefits Anne Beers Elementary School. She will be auctioning some of her new work & selling tee shirts featuring her Google Doodle design. The auction will be held at the North Hall of Eastern Market at 8pm with the live auction starting at 9pm. Tickets are $25 and they are available here.

Sunday afternoon at the Hill Center, catch Invasion of the Body Snatchers –the original from 1956, NOT the one from the 70s with Donald Sutherland which scared the living hell out of me when I was a kid.  ALL body snatcher movies are scary. The film is the final in the Seeing Red series with New Yorker staff writer Margaret Talbot and movie critic Nell Minow which explored the culture, politics, and personalities of Hollywood during the Cold War and Blacklist era. The screening is free and begins at 4pm. Register here.
