War of the Worlds by SCENA Theatre opens at the Atlas this weekend.

War of the Worlds by SCENA Theatre opens at the Atlas this weekend.

I can’t anymore with this rain! I’ve lost the will to do anything and I’m consuming Pacific Northwest amounts of coffee. It is a neat experiment on the important role the sun plays in moods, but I get the point and now I’m done.

How will we weather the weather?

Tonight at Union Market’s Test Kitchen get to know the cuisine of Naples with Al Volo’s Chef Daniele Catalani. Learn to prepare fried mozzarella, homemade fettucini with scampi and zeppole. That sounds like a menu from my Staten Island youth. You can’t see me but I’m making that Homer Simpson drooly noise. The class is from 6pm to 8pm and costs $54. Register here.

Friday, head to CHAW for weekly ART Nights. Tonight, channel your inner Bey (she’s in there!) for Dancing with Gigi’s “Dance like a Diva” class for 6:30-8:30pm.  The drop-in registration fee is $25. Call (202)547-6839 or email registration@chaw.org with any questions. The more reserved and visual types might prefer “Paint ‘n Sip” for $30 which includes light refreshments and materials.

Saturday is the Northeast Library’s Used Book Sale from 10:30am to 2pm. The sale will be held in the basement of the library at 7th and Maryland NE.

Learn the Art of French Cooking with Chef Gérard Pangaud at the Hill Center from 10am to 1pm. Chef Pangaud will demonstrate classic dishes such as Crispy Sweetbread with Wild Mushrooms, Roasted Garlic Sauce, Bouillabaisse of Monkfish “Marseillaise” and Tart Crumble with Rhubarb and Strawberries. The cost is $85 per person which includes food and wine. Register here.

SCENA Theatre brings H.G. Wells classic War of the Worlds to life at the Atlas.  The story of the Martian invasion was made infamous when Orson Wells broadcast this true sounding tale over the radio briefly terrifying listeners who were not informed that what they were hearing was fiction.  Audiences of all ages are welcome to enjoy this fast-paced action story before it heads to the Czech Republic for a run at the Prague Fringe Festival. Tickets are $25 -$40 and they are available here. The show runs through May 28th.

Sunday is the annual Capitol Hill Classic, a race which benefits the Capitol Hill Cluster School (Peabody Elementary, Watkins Elementary, and Stuart Hobson Middle School) Participants can join in a 10K, a 3K, and a kids’ fun run. Or stand on the sidelines and cheer! The funds raised through the NCB Capitol Hill Classic help to bridge the gap between the DC Public Schools budget and the money needed to fund field trips, buy art supplies, support classroom projects, provide professional development for our teachers, and fund the gardens and teachers’ requests. The 10K begins at 8:30am. Learn more about the event here.

The Folger Shakespeare Library hosts Cross Talk DC, a community discussion of race and religion through the lens of literature and history. The discussions will (hopefully) be sparked by performances of short scenes from The Merchant of Venice and District Merchants, are telling of the classic set in a post-Civil War DC. The forum is from 2pm to 6pm and all are invited. Playwright and American University professor Caleen Jennings will lead the forum and participants will be welcome to join in breakout discussions and enjoy refreshments. The event is free but registration is encouraged. Register here.
