The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) presents the following events in June 2016:
Thursday, June 2 –Do More 24 – Save the date! Get ready to rally your friends, family, and coworkers to help support our efforts to NEVER turn a child away for inability to pay for an arts experience. This 24-hour online day of giving, powered by United Way NCA, helps raise money for nonprofits serving DC, Maryland and Virginia. All the money raised here stays here — and makes change here. Learn more at DoMore24.org. All of the proceeds CHAW receives on Do More 24 will go to our annual Paint Bucket Campaign for our tuition assistance program. This year, our goal is higher than ever: raise $70,000 in 70 days to provide access to quality arts experiences for everyone. Thursday, June 2 – Staged Reading of Thomas Geoghegan’s play MONTICELLO, presented by Guillotine Theatre –“Monticello” has its premise in a historical fact: Thomas Jefferson did invite students from the University of Virginia to dine with him at Monticello. In 1826, the last year of Jefferson’s life, Edgar Allan Poe enrolled at the university. What might have happened in an encounter between Jefferson and Poe? Geoghegan’s play – set on July 2, 1826, which was two days before the fiftieth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence – offers an answer. “Monticello” is a play of ideas and poetry that grapples with one of the most revolutionary documents in political history.

Fridays, June 3 & 17 – Friday ARTnights: Drop-In Figure Drawing – The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) hosts a drop-in “Working from the Figure” session on Fridays, June 3 and June 17, 2016 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at CHAW, 545 7th Street, SE. Work on drawings or paintings in front of a live model in a session without formal instruction, facilitated by artist Will Fleishell. Please bring your own drawing materials. Easels are available. Fridays, June 3 & 17 – Friday ARTnights: Knit & Sip –After the hustle and bustle of a long week relax, reconnect with your friends and like-minded knitters, in a fun, neighborly environment. Enjoy light refreshments, coffee, tea and wine. Bring your own project or purchase a kit from the instructor to learn the basics. All experience levels welcome. Friday, June 10 – Friday ARTnights: Paint & Sip – Join the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) for Paint and Sip, part of CHAW’s popular Friday ARTnights program, for an evening of painting and wine on Friday, June 10, 2016 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at CHAW, 545 7th Street, SE. Friday, June 10 – Friday ARTnights: Grooving with GiGi – Line dancing – it happens at almost every summer party. Learn how to cha-cha slide, wobble, and even the original electric slide. Saturday, June 11 – CHAW Performance Festival, Digital DC, & Adult Student Show Opening – Join CHAW for a day packed with performances, art exhibitions, food, and neighborhood fun! Performances will take place at 10am, 12pm, and 2pmand will feature adult and youth performing arts students. The galleries will be open all day, culminating in the adult student show opening, 6pm-7:30pm. Humanities DC will also be at CHAW collecting paraphernalia, documents, and any and all DC history to digitize and add to its virtual museum. All activities will take place at the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, 545 7th St. SE, and are free and open to the public.
Saturday, June 11 – Intimate Florals: Judy Searles Solo Exhibit Opening – Judy Searles, a member of the Capitol Hill Art League (CHAL), will be exhibiting her solo show, “Intimate Florals,” in the CHAW gallery from June 11 through July 14. Join the artist and enjoy free wine, cheese, and mingling at the opening reception from 4:30pm to 6:30pm on Saturday, June 11 in the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop gallery, 545 7th St. SE. The Gallery is free and open to the public.
Saturday, June 22 – Theatre Performance – We Happy Few Productions Presents: CHALK – At its simplest, CHALK is a story of motherhood. A wise judge draws a chalk circle on the ground to determine the true mother of a contested child. However, it’s also a story about revolution and rebellion. It’s about the choices we are forced to make for ourselves, for our families and for the causes we believe in. It’s about the working class and the wealthy, justice and family, duty and survival. In an ever-changing world where nothing is black and white, how can we judge what’s right?
The show will be held in the accolade-winning black box theatre at the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, 545 7th St. SE (just two blocks south of the Eastern Market metro on the orange/blue/silver lines).

Saturday, June 25 – Mimoza Design Floral Workshop – Create an Asian-inspired bowl arrangement with orchids, grasses, and other flora. All of the supplies and tools are provided for attendees to create and take home a beautiful arrangement. No experience is necessary. Saturday, June 25 – Gallery Opening Reception – Master Craftsman: Artful Stories in the City – The work of sculptor Charles Bergen is a unique intersection of skill and imagination. With works ranging from sublime animal sculptures to grand public installations, his artistry, architectural savvy, and eye for uncommon forms in unconventional spaces render an engaging blend of precision and elegance that is both accessible and timeless. Master Craftsman: Artful Stories in the City highlights elements of design, engineering, collaboration through Bergen’s vision. The Opening Reception takes place Saturday, June 25from 5pm to 7pm and the show runs June 25 – August 13, 2016, with an Artist’s Talk by Charles Bergen on Saturday July 9, 5pm-7pm, in the Gallery at the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, 545 7th St. SE. The Gallery, Opening Reception, and Artist’s Talk are free and open to the public.
