Spring? Okay, so we’re doing this….

Tonight! Okay more like this afternoon celebrate the 84th birthday of the Northeast Library! Sponsored by the Friends of the Northeast Library.

The Hill Center presents Veterans Voices: Life and Spirituality After War. Veterans and Active Duty Service Members share their stories, focusing on themes of health, wellness and spirituality after war. The event is free and begins at 6:30. Register here.

Friday is almost always Art Night at CHAW which offers a rotating roster of drop-in classes. This week is a Working from the Figire drawing class, Knit ‘n Sip, and the monthly dance class Groovin’ with Gigi. This week is Shimmy Shimmy Go Go: Learn that 60s shimmy style made famous is those Beach Blanket movies. Learn more and register here.

Broadcast News is the Hill Center’s next entry for their Journalism in Film Series. I saw this movie with my high school boyfriend when it came out in the 80s and loved it just SO much which was probably weird for a teen. I realize now that it simply meant I was nerdier than even I could have known and destined to live not in suburban Jersey but here among all the super nerds. Holly Hunter’s crying jags, William Hurt’s excellent pretty-faced anchor and Albert Brooks’ are all worth a watch of course but Joan Cusack’s obstacle course office run with video tape is a classic. The screening is free and begins at 7pm. Register here.

Saturday the excellent DC area theater and youth education organization Young Playwright’s Theater is hosting their Giving Voice Award Gala in the North Hall of Eastern Market. YPT works with kids around the area and on the Hill, encouraging young writers to find their voice through playwriting. The event is 7pm to 11pm and tickets are $100, The reception includes hors d’oeurves, open bar, silent auction, music and dancing. Learn more here.

Move the clocks forward and be ready for the sun to stay up an extra hour!

Sunday the Congressional Cemetery hosts a reception for the art exhibit Wood and Fauna in the Voluptuary. The exhibit features the work of  Claudia Furlow (painting) and Jason Hebert (wood artistry.) The exhibit is in the chapel and runs Saturday through Monday. The reception is from 1pm to 4pm Sunday. Learn more here.

The Capital City Symphony closes out the weekend at the Atlas with a concert Haunted Topography  featuring the work of the composer David. T Little. The piece was inspired by the story of the mother of a soldier who died in Vietnam. She could not get over his death for many, man years and longed to see where he died. When she was finally shown a map of the area she began to heal. Sob. The concert is at 5pm and tickets are $15 to $25. You can get yours here.
