Go-Go Symphony returns to the Atlas Friday night

How is it March already?

Also? Isn’t that is such an old person thing to say? Ah, so be it.

Not caring about being old is also a rather oldster take on things. Hmm… This is kind of fun actually!

For those still young enough to care, here’s what’s happening this weekend.

Tonight head across the 11th Street Bridge at the Anacostia Playhouse Contradiction Dance presents Code Switch. The term refers to the ability to change to fit in with peer groups. The diverse company performs two performances Thursday and Friday at 8pm. Tickets are $20 and you get them here.

Friday you have a chance to get a healthy start to the weekend at Freed Bodyworks Anniversary and Open House. From 6pm to 9pm you can learn about the various health and wellness services available including massage, herbal medicine, tai chi, shamanic medicine and meditation. Freed Bodyworks is located at 1337 Pennsylvania Ave SE.  Sangria and snacks will be available.

The Atlas Performing Arts Center’s INTERSECTIONS Festival enters its second weekend and there will be many opportunities to get your arts on. If you haven’t checked out a Go Go Symphony performance get tickets. Classical music with a go go hook is truly an-only-in-DC moment you need to experience. The Capitol Symphony Symphony paired with the the Go Go Symphony is a super-fun interactive experience for all ages. Tickets are $25 and are still available but will sell out. Get yours now.

Spotlight won Best Picture so what better time to revisit the best of Hollywood on DC Journalism films. The Hill Center begins a four week screening with the gran-daddy of the modern day journo-flick All the President’s Men. Enjoy young Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman as the Post’s whippersnappers Woodward and Bernstein. The Roslyn parking garage and Jason Robards’ Ben Bradlee are my personal faves. And to think we eventually even learned who Deep Throat was. Sigh.. the mystery was fun while it lasted.  The screening is free and begins at 7pm. Register here.

See the actual Spotlight for free at Capitol Hill Presbyterian Church at 7:30pm. Alice Ogden Bellis (Presbyterian minister and Professor of Hebrew Bible at Howard University School of Divinity) will lead the post screening discussion. Everyone is welcome. The movie is rated R. Popcorn will be served. The church is located at 4th and Independence Ave. SE. For more information, e-mail aobellis@gmail.com

Celebrate East Side Yoga‘s first birthdayFriday BYO Happy Hour is an all-out birthday bash. All are invited to join in toasting their first year from 7:30pm – 9pm. There will be plenty of bubbly (alcoholic and non-), and will be noshing on some fabulous birthday cake provided by our newest business affiliate, Capitol Sweets.

Support Boy Scout Troop 380 in its main fundraiser of the year. The Fish Fry Dinner at St. Peter’s Parish Hall (313 2nd St SE) The aforementioned fish, side, lemonade/tea and bakesale desserts will be in abundance.  Adults $18; Children (under 12) – $7; 3 & Under Free ($2 more at the door). Tickets are available here.

Saturday evening is of course the  19th annual School Within School Auction from 6pm to 10pm at St. Mark’s Church (301 A St, SE). School auctions are a hoot even if your kid doesn’t go to said school. Or even if you have no school age kids. Open bar, snacks, gossip and silent auction are super entertaining.

Damn. Is this me just being old again? Sometimes it’s hard to tell. Whatever. It’s a lovely neighborhood school so come on out!

INTERSECTIONS is in full swing all day Saturday. Check out Story District (formerly Speakeasy DC) present Mind over Matter: True Stories about Living with Mental Illness. Performance is at 8pm and tickets are $25. These usually sell out so…buy here. All of the INTERSECTIONS events can be found here.

Close out the weekend at INTERSECTIONS on Sunday. How about a little Salt n’ Pepa? The Griot Girls to travel through time, exploring and learning about the various voices of women throughout the African Diaspora who have fought for gender equality. The show includes, poetry, dance, rap and music as the girls explore the intersections of politics and art. My Mic Sounds Nice is part of the festival’s family programming. The performance begins at 3:30pm and tickets are $8. Get them here.

Salt n’Pepa are classified as oldies now and just further proof…
