To Do Weekend of March 17th – 20th

Happy St. Patrick's Day. Behave.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day. Behave.

So, dramatic week so far, right? The metropocalypse and the collapse and rebirth of Results were heart-stopping events for many Hill-dwellers. Thank goodness tonight is St. Paddy’s. Calm those nerves by drinking green beer and singing The Wild Rover with your new besties.

For those of us who have perhaps moved beyond green beer, I offer these suggestions:

Tonight catch up with the day-long partiers at Star and Shamrock who have been at it since 8am. (Godspeed, my friends.) They have been enjoying all-day array featuring a classic house-cured Corned Beef and Cabbage, homemade Irish Bangers and Colcannon Knish (GENIUS!) and drink specials. The MollyHawks take the stage at 7pm though I don’t know if The Wild Rover is part of their repertoire.

Note to self: drag the teens the the Star and Shamrock and request The Wild Rover. Sing. Loudly.

For a more intellectual evening head to the Folger Shakespeare Library for an evening with scholar and professor for the University of Oxford Tiffany Stern who will discuss  how Shakespeare’s plays became reality, offering a new point of view on the art of playwriting and the collaborative challenges of bringing scripts to life. The talk begins at 7pm and tickets are $15/$10 members. Learn more here. If I had not already chosen to embarrass my kids (priorities!) this is where I would be.

Friday morning join Councilmember Charles Allen for his Community Office Hours at The Pretzel Bakery‘s new location. He will be there from 8am to 9:30am so stop in, tell him your concerns and support and expanding local business. Yum.

Without fail, I think about the Pretzel Bakery and I immediately crave the puffysaltytwistycarby sources of bliss. Thighs, you are doomed.

If you can’t make the morning superfuntimes meet up with Charles and Co Monday evening at 6pm for a Ward 6 Happy Hour at Gordon Biersch. Same concept but with booze. What could go wrong?

The Hill Center continues its Journalism in DC film series with Shattered Glass, the story the New Republic’s infamous fabulist, Stephen Glass. Hayden Christensen (aka OG Darth Vader in the unspeakable Star Wars prequels) plays Glass which makes sense since the dude is just vacant and obtuse, but  I’m in it for Peter Saarsgard as Glass’ editor Charles Lane because he is just so damn fun to watch. The screening begins at 7pm and is free. Register in advance here.

Saturday at Nats Park you can watch the sweet kiddo baseball movie The Sandlot at 2pm if you sit through a Nats Plus (season tickets) presentation. The NATS PLUS Presentations will run at 11:00am and 12:30pm. Just click here to RSVP and learn more.

The Northeast Library is hosting a Self-Defense Workshop led by an instructor from Defend Yourself. The workshop begins at 10am. The two-hour workshop will cover the basics of self-defense, verbal tactics and some physical techniques.  People of all sizes and abilities are welcome, ages 16 and up.  Call 202-698-1363 to reserve your spot. This program is made possible by the Friends of the Northeast Library.

Sunday head back to the Folger for the Folger Consort’s Playing With Fire. It seems theatre, language and painting were not the only art forms to experience change and development during the Renaissance, but music as well. Of course. Musicians contimued experiment and improvise during this period and the Consort Players will do just that as well as play the dances and tunes the groundings were digging at the time. Bear baiting or a consort? That’s a tough one but sadly you don’t have that choice. Tickets are available here.

Mr. Henry’s hosts a Comedy Showcase that evening at 6pm. Sadly we have few comedy events on the Hill. Are we too serious? Do we lack a sense of humor? Did we trade our funny bones during a security clearance interview? I love you guys but it’s probably all of the above. The good folks behind Last Resort Comedy will seek to recify that blah situation with this monthly series. The performers will be Daylon Morrison – (Finalist, Baltimore’s Funniest Comedian, 2013, Magooby’s Joke House); Paris Sashay – (Howard Theater, Washington Watch with Roland Martin) and Cerrome Russell – (BET’s “Hell Date”, opener for Hannibal Buress.) Tickets are $5 in advance or $8 day of the show. They are going fast so get them here.
