Zip Zap Circus USA and Airborne DC return to the Atlas’ INTERSECTIONS Festival with Reaching for the High Notes

Another week almost over. And hey it’s Leap Year so February is extra long. Joy.

How shall spend this weekend?

Tonight at Maketto (1351 H Street NE) check out visual artist Kunst’s exhibit of prints, collages and drawings made during a recent trip to Germany.

Friday the Atlas Performing Arts Center opens its 7th INTERSECTIONS Festival. Two weeks of events and performances that run the gamut from kid-friendly to flamenco to updated Greek classics. Check out Zip Zap Circus USA- Airborne DC’s’ high flying piece Reaching the High Notes or the Rude Mechanicals Antigone Reflected inspired by the recent Baltimore riots. These and more can be found here.

CHAW hosts Friday night Art Night devoted to craftING and craftBREWS. Join teaching artist Cherie Lester leads the evening of crafting, community and craft beer while guests work on projects and engage with new and old friends. No experience is necessary. Call 202.547.6839 to register.

Saturday is the opening of the DC Streetcar. For reals. I have feelings about this… But the fun kicks off at 13th and H NE at 10am.

The new H Street Nando’s Peri Peri opens on Saturday and Sunday as well. To be on the safeside they will be running their own streetcar. (I need to know if DDOT is insulted by this. CAN DDOT even be shamed at this point??) From 5 PM to 10 PM on Saturday from  11AM to 10 PM on Sunday 100% of every bill will go to supporting community programs at the Atlas.

Learn the secrets of vegan cooking with Sticky Fingers’ Doron Petersan. The chef will lead a class from 11am to 2pm at the Hill Center. Participants will learn to make stromboli with house-made mozzarella and sausage,  winter green salad with fennel and citrus and a pistachio lemon berry parfait. The cost is $85 and you can register here.

Most of us, if we are lucky, will get old. Here on the Hill there is an organization which helps people stay in their homes as long as possible. Capitol Hill Village is one of the leading groups in the country that helps seniors age in place. Their annual gala will be held Saturday January 27th at Dock 5 at Union Market. The auction, called Meet Me at Mardi Gras will feature a silent and live auction as well as music, food and drink. The basic ticket price is $125 and the event is open to all, especially the not yet old but look in the mirror and you know its coming. Admit it and get your tickets here.

Sunday is the Oscars ceremony which means it is also the annual Red Carpet Celebration supporting Jan’s Tutoring House. The program has provided tutoring and mentoring programs for DC’s kids for 25 years. this pre-Oscar ceremony party at the Hill Center features drinks , snacks and lots of fun auction items to bid on. The event runs from 5pm t0 7pm so you can get home in time to watch the other red carpet festivities, if you are not boycotting them this year. The minimum donation is $25 and you can learn more here.
