Today, February 22, is the last day you can vote in Google’s annual Doodle4Google competition: make sure you vote for Eastern High School‘s Akilah Johnson‘s doodle in the 9-12 category! Recently, FOX5 profiled the talented sophomore on the creation of her art. The assignment for this year’s doodle was to create a doodle reflective of the artist. According to the Fox5 interview, Akilah went home over the Thanksgiving break and worked hard on her assignment. She is one of 50 finalists and the only representative from DC.

Akilah’s vibrant doodle, which spells the word in a combination of box braids and a young African American girl’s head. My favorite thing about it is to try to see all the DC references, and to get an insight about her and her identity from her Doodle. All the other finalists’ drawings are really lovely, but (and this is probably TOTAL BIAS), I feel Akilah’s is one that tells a story of more than just a girl: it is a community’s story, told in bright markers, crayons and colored pencils.
