Wrestling Jerusalem runs through January 24th at the Atlas

Welcome back friends. Sorry for the lack of To Dos for the past few weeks but I figured you’d do fine on your own, considering…

But what does 2016 have in store for us???

Tonight is Bluegrass night at the Argonaut. Grab some dinner by their new fireplace before heading upstairs for some of the area’s finest roots music.

Friday evening, Freed Bodyworks hosts an open house from 5pm to 7pm. The expanded offerings include yoga, mindfulness, meditation, nutrition, and herbal medicine. There will be snacks. (Rumor has it there will be pie. Don’t quote me.) Punch and mulled wine will wash down that pie (possibly) while you enter a raffle, too. Freed’s is located at 1337 Pennsylvania Avenue SE and more information can be found here.

Mosaic Theater company’s third show recently opened at the Atlas Performing Arts Center. Wrestling Jerusalem is a solo performance by the play’s writer, Aaron Davidman. Throughout the piece he takes on a dozen roles and examines the complex identity, history and politics of the city. The production is part of the Changing Middle East Festival: The War Comes Home. The show runs through January 24th and tickets are $20 -$40. Learn more here.

Saturday, the Southeast Library (403 7th St. SE) hosts its monthly book sale at 10am.

Try on a new hobby at a Meditation workshop at the Hill Center. I used to think I was just too loud and crazy to meditate. Not true. Occasionally I CAN sit down and shut up. Anyone can and looking at the aggro driving around here, we probably all should. American Buddhist nun, Gen Kelsang Nyema will lead a three hour workshop which aims to truly allow us to have a “Happy New Year. The workshop begins at 10am and is $25. Learn more here.

Gallery O/H hosts its annual Twelfth Night/ Mardi Gras party. I have never been but I swear this year is the year! The evening will feature live music with Ian Walters & Phil Wiggins, a fortune teller, fire troupe, king cake and more. Admission is free but donations are encouraged. Proceeds will go to Santa’s Cause DC, a local organization that contributes to the support of the foster children of Family Matters of Greater Washington, the same group which benefits from the December Krampusnacht.

Sunday celebrate the legendary Billy Strayhorn at The Corner Store (900 South Carolina Avenue). Strayhorn was Duke ellington’s pianist a composer. You may have heard a little tune called Take the A Train? That’s him. Award winning musicians Sean Lane (piano) and Seth Kibel (clarinet, saxophone, flute) and  guest vocalist Julie Kurzava will perform Strayhorn’s hits and some little known gems. $20 advance donation and $25 at the door.
