Kay Wigs, the tiny but mighty basement wig store at 325 Pennsylvania Avenue SE, is closing its doors on January 31 after 14 years on Capitol Hill and 41 years of business– originally, the store was on F Street NW.

Kay, the eponymous owner and styler of wigs, is still looking for a new place. Her lease ended in December of 2015 and she decided not to renew. We hope Kay is able to reopen somewhere, as some of our fondest memories (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic) involve looking in her storefront and wondering if life is better as a blonde, redhead, or with Jheri curls.

As for the sale: Kay was able to extend her stay for one month, so EVERYTHING has to go. This EVERYTHING includes the wigs –some of which are beautiful lace fronts that would ordinarily start at $90-$100. The mannequins as well as the showcases have to go– if you’re in need of one, they are priced at about $100. Kay also has polishes and fans, as well as hats and fascinators. I made off with a wonderful platinum blonde Marie Antoinette number which Claudia has dared me to wear in public (it will happen soon) but I will forever wonder about the Wig That Got Away: a fabulous bright red wig that would periodically pop up in the window, and which I was too cheap/chicken to ever wear.

Wishing Kay finds a new place soon! Go pay her a visit and say hello from us.
