Capitol Hill:

Let There Be Light

Almost a month ago I noticed the star hanging from a crane over Capitol Riverfront. Amidst the array of commercial cranes there was this single beacon of light. And it brightened the night.

There are also exuberant holiday lights on every block of Capitol Hill. They’re funny and kitch, a rainbow of ROYGBIV, twinkling white, grey and blue and even pink. well-designed and elegant, and each display is joyful and spirited. But on some stretched of sidewalk, the houses are dark.

Here’s my call in the night: In the spirit of community please turn your front door lights — and your back light, for good measure. Not everyone is inclined to decorate and that’s completely understandable. While many of us take more caution in the neighborhood that we may have in the past, we Capitol Hill residents are walkers and safety is a priority. Because of the tree canopy or the absence of enough street lights a few more porch lights make quite a difference. Leave yours on and you’ll make yours safer. Leave the back ones on and you’ll discurrage questionable nighttime activities in your alley.

Twinkle, twinkle and to all a good night!
