Holiday weekend happening so most of you are reading this as whilst speeding away from DC towards beachy bliss. (Watch the sharks!)

For those of us staying put there may be a few distractions…

Tonight learn a few new recipes for the season Summertime Entertaining Cooking with Chef Matt Finarelli at the Hill Center. You will learn some classic summer crowd pleasers like potato salad and blueberry pie and snazzy showstoppers like avocado, fennel and grapefruit salad. The class begins at 6:30 and costs $65. Register here.

Rosdale Library hosts an event about the Tuskeegee Airmen, the first African-American men to fly in the U.S. Armed Forces. The veterans will talk about their  sacrifice, heroism and their fight to become pilots despite racial discrimination and Jim Crow laws.  The event begins at 7pm and is free. Light refreshements will be served, courtesy of the Friends of Roseadale Library.

Saturday is the 4th and the best way to begin the celebration is of course at the Capitol Hill Parade on Barracks Row. Whether you are a marcher or a watcher the event is pure fun and an example of the neighborhood at its best.

The Mandarin Oriental is hosting a fireworks watching party benefitting Jan’s Tutoring House. Stroll on down to  the hotel is at 1330 Maryland Avenue, SW between 6 and 10 to stake out a spot to watch the show. Admission is free and snacks and drinks will be available for purchase. The proceeds will got to help provide educational enrichment to struggling local kids.

Sunday evening the Nats play the Giants at 8pm. Will Calvin Coolidge be on hand? If so WHY?

And be sure to check out our guide on all the ways you can celebrate the 4th of July on the Hill!
