To Do: Weekend of July 23 – 26

ToDoThe summer has hit that point where the weather is frequently oppressive and miserable we begin to long for the crispness of fall but yet the fear that we haven’t yet wrung the juice out of it sufficiently begins to creep into our hearts and forces us to get out and live already.

Here are some options.

Tonight come cheer on the undefeated Capitol Little League Majors All Star squad as they play against the also undefeated Cap City Little League. They are in a battle to see who is seeded where for the semi finals over the weekend. The winner of the DC tournament will go on to represent the 3 stars and 2 bars at the regional tournament in Bristol, CT. A Hill team in this age group has never won the city title. Could this be their year? The game begins at Ft. Lincoln Park, a must-see, super 70s era park near the DC Costco.

The Hill Center hosts a free screening of the documentary Most Likely to Succeed which examines the state of education in the US and suggests options. A Q and A with the film’s producer Ted DIntersmith will following the screening. The film begins at 7pm. To guarantee your spot, register here.

Friday night pack a picnic and head to Yards Park for the weekly Friday night concert series. This week’s artist is indie-rock musician Justin Trawick. The concerts begin at 6:30 but you will want to get there a bit early to secure a spot on the grass.

Saturday be a part of a community-wide art project at the Atlas Performing Arts Center. Mobile Artist Kevin Reese is facilitating the building of multiple community-inspired mobiles which will be designed over the course of four sessions. The mobiles will be installed and revealed to the public at the H Street Festival  September 19th.  All are invited to attend. Though the workshops are best suited for those ages 8 and up. The first of the four sessions is this Saturday the 25th at from 1pm tp 4pm. Participation is free. Learn more about the project and register here.

Chef Erik Bruner-Yang, is teaching a vegan cooking workshop at the Hill Center Saturday from 11am to 2pm. Known for his porktastic kimchee ramen at Toki Underground and the multitude of yummies at Makketto, the James Beard nominee will tap into the Taiwanese and Cambodian inspired products made for his Union Market store Honeycomb to create a vegan menu. No mention what that will be but it will no doubt be the best thing you will eat that day. The workshop is $85 and there is still room in it as of publishing time. Register here.

Sunday you need to get in some Fringe time. This summer spectacular is nearing the end of it’s 10th anniversary run so you don’t want to miss out. There is so much going on today including stories about race, foodies, trash and belly buttons. Something for everyone. Sunday’s calendar can be viewed here.
