Mother’s Day on The Hill: Where to Buy Flowers

Tulip bouquet for Valentine's Day

With Mother’s Day coming this Sunday, we thought it was a perfect time to review our flower shop options around the Hill. Because what better way to bring a smile to the mother in your life than with a colorful arrangement of flowers?

If you want to pick out your arrangement yourself, Blue Iris at Eastern Market is a neighborhood favorite. Harris Teeter has surprisingly good quality bunches as well, especially for the price, if you want to try your hand at mixing your own bouquet. Or you can go another direction and send an Edible Arrangement from the location at 600 Pennsylvania, SE.

Urban Stems has been a go-to for me when I don’t have the time or ability to pick up and deliver myself. The flower arrangements come in a cute bag, concealing a damp sponge that keeps the flowers hydrated until the recipient can put them in a vase.

Another option, if the recipient is a gardener, is to get a plant from Ginkgo Gardens, Frager’s or Surroundings— they obviously last much longer than cut flowers and can be a lovely sentiment.

In an attempt to include shops I don’t personally frequent, I turned to Yelp and found listings for Salads and Flowers, Bird’s Florist, and Avenue Florist. If you have ordered from any of these (or if you have another florist to add to the list), please let us know!
