NoMa residents and yoga enthusiasts have a new option for affordable, high-quality classes in the neighborhood – Yoga NoMa!

Yoga NoMa, the neighborhood’s first yoga studio, is unique for a few reasons. Located on the ground floor of the office building at 1200 First Street, NE, the studio space was originally donated by the building owners and the NoMA Business Improvement District (BID) as part of a project to utilize vacant retail space to meet neighborhood needs.

“Answering the call of the NoMa community for more fitness opportunities in the area, the NoMa BID hired me to create a space that would bring experienced teachers to the neighborhood at affordable prices,” said Studio Coordinator Julia Romano. “I think we’ve done a pretty fantastic job at doing just that, and based on the overwhelmingly positive community response – I think NoMa agrees!”

Julia hires teachers with five or more years of experience who are able to craft classes for every level of yogi. The studio offers $10-$15 classes from the ABCs of Yoga to Power Flow for intermediates and everything in between. Julia is especially excited about a new popular class on Saturdays, Yoga in American Sign Language. Additionally, the studio offers several workshops and trainings each month in areas like meditation and prenatal yoga. Julia is also open to creating new classes based on student ideas.

I was able to join Julia for her Wednesday Evening Flow class. She’s clearly a very experienced teacher who was careful to cater the class to all levels of practice. I really enjoyed the class, and I’d encourage you to check out the studio (just be sure to read the instructions on how to find the studio before going for your first time!).

Julia is running two specials right now. Bring in a plant, and get a free class. She’s also offering free introductory classes to workplaces in NoMa – email her at yoga@yoganoma.com to set up a workplace class.

“The community is what infuses Yoga NoMa with its spirit, and I’m so excited to be building this space together,” said Julia.
