And we’re off. Holiday time. Lots of parties and events to attend, some fun and some more ahem mandatory. Pace yourself. Drink plenty of water, fill up on carrot sticks and get plenty of rest. If you happen to have some downtime check out these fun events.

All Weekend-Participate in a Coat Drive for Veterans and Families sponsored by  Veteran’s Team, Community Connections (Non-profit for Mental Health) They are accepting adult and child coats, winter clothing, hats/scarves/gloves. You can drop off at either  Community Connections  Lobby- 801 Pennsylvania Ave SE or the Georgetown Library- 3260 R St NW from now until Dec. 16th.

Tonight at the Hill Center beer journalist and cookbook author John Holl discusses the diverse flavors of cold weather beers.This class will sample at least four different beers that highlight the best of what American brewers offer in the cold winter months. Holl’s book “American Craft Beer Cookbook” will be available for sale. The two hour class begins at 7pm and costs $25. Register here.

Friday at the Folger to celebrate what would have been American master Bernard Malamud’s 100th birthday, the PEN/Faulkner Foundation and the Malamud Family will host previous recipients of the PEN/Malamud Award for Excellence in the Art of the Short Story in a celebratory evening of readings in Malamud’s honor. Participating authors include Edward P. Jones, Lorrie Moore, and Tobias Wolff. The readings begin at 7:30pm and tickets are $25.

Friday night is H Street’s 3rd annual Krampusnacht, a Bavarian tradition that has its roots in pagan fun-times. Krampus is “a scary clawed incubus who hangs around with Santa Claus.” Ok. It is all in good fun and the H Street event is family friendly beginning with a reception at Gallery O/H (1354 H Street NE) at 6pm with games and prizes and Santa followed by a walk down H and an after party back at the Gallery. $10 suggested donation or unwrapped child’s gift to support SANTA’s CAUSE DC, which brings the spirit of the holidays to foster children in our area. Saturday morning at 10:30 bring the kids to see The Polar Express at the Rosedale library. The event is free. Believe!

At the Hill Center from 1pm – 2pm, local teen authors read aloud from their children’s books. After the reading, their books will be sold and the authors will be available to autograph them. Proceeds from the book sales will fund Reach’s Summer Program, during which teens create children’s books to engage and inspire young readers by diversifying children’s literature. Find out more about our books at reachincorporated.org/books. The event is free. Register in advance here.

Union Market hosts an all-day (in three separate sessions) beer festival called… Hoppy Holidays.  Expect all you can drink beers, food trucks, live music, cornhole and Jenga. Beards optional though expected and wear your prettiest flannel. Tickets are $40 and the food truck fare is extra.

If you prefer something more arty, less beer-focused the Atlas hosts DC’s “contemporary cool king” Brad Linde and his 10-piece ensemble for a Post Cool Yule.  If you are in the mood for deconstructed and re-imagined holiday classics then this is for you. The concert starts at 10pm and tickets are $20-$32. 

Sunday is your last chance to catch Julius Caesar at the Folger. Get in some Bard before the holidays!
