To Do List for the Weekend of 9/19

Busy weekend ahead, so let’s get this started.

Tonight at the Hill Center’s Talk of the Hill series will be the upcoming elections. Jennifer Duffy and David Wasserman of The Cook Political Report will discuss the House, Senate and gubernatorial races with host, journalist Bill Press. They may even discuss the 2016 presidential race. The discussion begins at 7 pm and you can register here.

Friday night learn about the birth of the modern yoga movement at a screening of the documentary Living Yoga. The film chronicles the life and teachings of Swami Satchidananda, founder of the ashram Yogaville, near Charlottesville, VA. This special screening will be followed by Q&A with Alan and Carol Binstock, who began studying with Swami Satchidananda in the 1960s, shortly after his arrival to the US. At CHAW from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm you can “Paint Clay and Sip Cabernet. Teaching artist Clay Hollencamp will teach students a technique called frisket used to paint tile. Think of it as a happy hour that both engages and damages your brain cells. The one-time workshop is $40. Learn more here.

Saturday 12 pm to 7 pm is the H Street Festival. The spanning the entire corridor from 3rd to 14th Streets NE, the festival features food, drink, performances activities and fun for just about everyone. Unless you hate crowds of course. Along with the usual art cars and dance floors this year Pizza Parts and Service will sponsor a Marinara Dunk Tank which sounds awful but if swimming in sauce is your thing than go for it. This year H Street Main Street will launch an app to help festival goers get a handle on the layout of the city’s largest and best street fest.

DC Veg Fest returns to Yards Park. Attendees can enjoy free vegan food samples and cooking demos and live music. The event goes from 11am to 6pm and is free.

Sunday afternoon at 5pm at the Hill Center, is a performance of dancer and choreographer Sarah J. Ewing’s piece Australia Home Land.  As an Australian transplant who now calls Capitol Hill home the work asks the audience, “What defines home?”.  This family-friendly performance is free and you can register here
