To Do List

Having an August staycation?  We have some idea about how you can wile away these long days of August.

Start your weekend early with a little quiet time on Thursday evening at the Hill Center. They’ve teamed with DC Public Libraries to screen some silent films this summer. This weeks features three short films with the glamorous Gloria Swanson. Lights go down at 7 p.m.

You have two great free options for Friday night. Hit the weekly concert at Yards Park and enjoy the funk party covers of Back to Zero. The fun starts at 6:30, but make sure you have time on the front or back end to hit one of the new eateries. We love to end the night at Ice Cream Jubilee.

It seems like outdoor summer screens have popped up at every corner, but for a great variety of food and a unique setting head to Union Market. If you want to park your car at the weekly drive-in movie, you’ll need to reserve a $10 spot, but there are lots of free seats too. James Bond makes an appearance in Casino Royale, starting at 8:30.

If neon is your thing, join the crowds at the Glo Run at RFK on Saturday night. For the $50 registration for the 5K, you’ll get not only ‘glow gear’ and a neon shirt, but a pass to an after-party.

If theatre is your preference,  you can choose from productions at Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) and the Atlas Performing Arts Center. At CHAW you can see Gilbert and Sullivan’s  “Patience, Bunthorne’s Bride” Friday through Sunday at 7:30 p.m. and a Saturday matinee at 3 p.m. Tickets are $20 for this production and cast members hail from the CHAW community, the glut arts community and the community-at-large.

At the Atlas you can see “Shining City” by Conor McPherson, produced by Scena Theatre. This suspenseful drama examines the impulsive choices we make and their haunting effects on our lives. If you can’t make the Saturday performance at 8 p.m. or the Sunday matinee at 3 p.m., have no fear, the show runs through September 21.

Do you hear the words southern and fried and stand up and take notice? Make a stop at Capitol Lounge Saturday from 5-10 p.m. for the Southern Fried Maison-Dixon Pop Up. Chef Adam Cox teams up with Granville Moore’s Chef Teddy Folkman for some spicy southern soul food including Maison-Dixon’s signature dish, Nashville-style HOT Chicken, as well as deep fried, smoked pork chop, chicken ‘n waffles, grilled pimento cheese, jalapeno cheese grits, hand dipped corn dogs, and smoked brisket sloppy joes. You’re drooling too, right?

Keep cool and have a great weekend!
