Here’s a neighborhood credibility question: Do you know where Kingman Island is?

If you answered ‘no,’ then it’s about time to dig out a map and find it. This is an island oasis away from city life, and it’s also the host for one of DC’s best local music festivals, the Kingman Island Bluegrass and Folk Festival.

Now in its fifth year, the festival celebrates music, food, and the Anacostia River. And, believe it or not, DC is a bluegrass town with a healthy crop of musicians known for their banjo strumming abilities. This year’s line-up includes more than two dozen bands, and it’s an all ages concert that will only run you $10 (a suggested donation, made at the door and benefiting Living Classrooms).

Whether this is your first year, or your fifth, here are a few tips to keep in mind for next Saturday.

Getting there:
Gates open at 12:30 p.m. The entrance to the Kingman Island Bluegrass and Folk Festival is at RFK Stadium’s lot #6. The easiest ways to get there: Metro or bike. It’s a short walk from the Stadium/Armory Metro station, or you can bike valet at the gate, thanks to a partnership with BicycleSPACE.

What to bring:
Don’t forget the blanket and fold-up chairs! Kingman Island is a natural habitat in the middle of the Anacostia, so if you want a seat, it’s BYO-chair. Also, if the concert is anything like last year — a beautiful and balmy day — you may also want to bring a small, soft-size cooler filled with cold drinks and food. And, don’t forget the sunscreen!

Can Fido come?
Yes, dogs are permitted, as long as you keep them on a leash and clean-up after your pet.

What can I expect?
Five stages, all with bluegrass music, including one stage that’s specifically geared toward kids. In total, there are more than 30 local artists. And, make sure you work-up an appetite. Already, 14 food trucks have signed on: Doug the Food DudeThat Cheesecake TruckHalal GrillPopped RepublicCajunatorsSouth Meets EastThe Big CheeseDC SlicesRed Hook Lobster PoundGoodiesKafta ManiaBurgorillaCarolina Q, and Sinplicity … Phew! Bring a few extra bills and pay in cash.

Do I need an advance ticket?
Technically, no. You can make your donation at the gate. But, if you buy in advance, you can take advantage of a free beer and skip the drink ticket line. Advance tickets are on sales here.

What other activities do they have planned?
The festival is a celebration of the island and the environment. Be sure to explore the wandering paths in the forest. And, get there early to take advantage of the free kayak rentals. Obviously, the best way to see the island is by paddling your way around it.

How can I pay it forward?
For those looking for volunteering opportunities, this Saturday a volunteer clean-up is being held with REI. It’s a great way to get a sneak peak of the natural beauty that is Kingman Island.
