First Bite: Anh-Dao

Mmmm. Pho. Uploaded to flickr.com by htby.

Get your pho on! Anh-Dao quietly opened a few months ago on the 1100 block of Pennsylvania Avenue SE, between the “temporary” Frager’s paint store and the take-out pizza shop.

You almost have to know it’s there, since there was no grand opening celebration, no major announcements, plus the restaurant does not have a website.

Yes, you read correctly, no website.  There’s also no delivery service.  With little foot traffic on that block, Anh-Dao has relied on word of mouth and good neighborhood connectivity to announce its presence on Capitol Hill.

What Anh-Dao does offer is authentic Vietnamese food in a quiet, modest dining room and take-out if you go pick it up.  The menu isn’t exhaustive, but there are plenty of appetizers, entrees, and salads to choose from.

If you are like me, you sometimes just want delicious comfort food that is soup made of broth, fresh vegetables, and tender meat.  Here’s where Anh-Dao delivers, as their version of pho are perfect for these bitter cold (and snowy spring) nights.  The broth is steaming hot and fragrant, and each bowl comes with the standard array of toppings – cilantro, bean sprouts, lime wedge, and more.

The menu and staff are kid-friendly, and while I got my food to-go, I did notice several little ones dining in with their families.  There is also a full vegetarian menu that includes options for appetizers and entrees.

Call ahead and pick up some pho or other Southeast Asian dishes at Anh-Dao.  With a straightforward menu and friendly staff, this little eatery will quickly turn from hidden gem to neighborhood star.

Anh-Dao, 1123 Pennsylvania Avenue SE, Washington, DC, 20003.  Open daily for dine-in and carry out.  Monday-Thursday 11am – 9pm, Friday-Saturday 11am – 10pm, Sunday 11am – 9pm. 202-546-4641

This was a RE-opening. They are the same folks that operated the Vietnamese restaurant in the larger space that included the corner building before closing a few years prior.
