Hello weekend! Groundhog be damned, we must get out of the house. So if you are able to tear yourself away from the train wreck/triumph of the human spirit that is Sochi, I offer these suggestions.

Tonight at the Hill Center there is a conversation between Washington Post Book Editor Ron Charles and poet Carl Philips. The two will discuss Philips life and work and the chat will be followed by a reception where all can mingle. The event begins at 7 and is free but you must register here.

Friday evening at the Atlas the Great Noise Ensemble returns with Pan-Demonium. The concert promises to be an eclectic program of odd juxtapositions and grotesque visuals! Victoria Bond’s Frescoes and Ash reflects on mosaics and frescoes discovered in the buried ruins of Pompeii. The concert begins at 8pm and tickets are available here.
At the Hill Center the Hitchcock series continues with Strangers on a Train. The super-creepy film, features the two strangers who meet and somehow decide to commit murder for each other. “Criss Cross.” Shudder. The screening is free and begins at 7pm. Register here.
Saturday celebrate the reopening of the Northeast Library. From 10am to 2pm there will be story times, tours, games, crafts and a performance. Check out the complete schedule here.

Capitol Hill Books celebrates Second Saturday with free wine and cheese and $10 off books from 4pm to 7pm.

Afro-Cuban percussionist and singer Pedrito Martinez hits the stage at the Atlas with his band. Martinez plays a lain-tinged jazz that has become a favorite with musicians across New York who flock to hear him when their gigs are done. Watch this and see why. Concert starts at 8pm and tickets are available here.

Sunday go all in and join in the Deep Stack Poker Tournament at the Hill Center. The event begins at 11 am and will go all day. Last hand starts at 7:30. The buy-in is $180 if you register in advance online or $200 at the door. I understand very little about poker so I’ll just send you here so you can make sense of it. Good luck!

Jen DeMayo is Director of Community for the Atlas Performing Arts Center.
