To Do

It looks like we may get a break from the brutal cold this weekend, but chances are you’ll still want to stay indoors. Here some ideas of places to take shelter whilst enjoying yourself.

Tonight:

Throwdown Syndicate headlines at the Rock and Roll Hotel. They describe their sound as “Groove Ghetto Metal that’ll warm the cockles of your heart and the muscles of your Soul.” Sounds kind of perfect for a chilly Thursday. Doors open at 8pm and the show starts then as well. Tickets are $12 and are available online.

Friday:

Third Coast Percussion takes the stage at the Atlas. A high-energy ensemble committed to exploring the full range of percussive instruments, they meld the energy of rock music with the precision and nuance of classical chamber works.  Take a look and see what they do. The concert begins at 8pm and tickets are available online.

At the Hill Center, the Hitchcock series continues with Shadow of a Doubt. One of the tightest screenplays Hitchcock filmed written by playwright Thornton Wilder, the film focuses on the nature of evil and follows  worldly (and maybe evil) Uncle Charlie and his namesake, naïve Young Charlie. The screening begins at 7 and is free but reservations are recommended. Reserve here.

Saturday:

Jazz favorite Don Byron brings his New Gospel Quintet to the Atlas. Byron find sweet spot between two uniquely American musical genres, gospel and jazz. Check out what what that means here.  The show starts at 8pm and tickets are available here.  Come early to go behind the music with the editors of the DC jazz blog CapitalBop. They will host a pre-show listening session at 7pm where they will chat with Byron about his musical influences. These Riffin’ sessions are always informative and a rare opportunity to hear about what makes these musicians  tick.

Sunday:

Head over to the Folger for their latest offering, Richard the III. Everyone’s favorite bad guy, watch as Richard gleefully takes down family and friends one by one on his way to the throne.  The Folger has transformed their traditional Elizabethan style space into a theatre in the round so expect to feel close to  the action. And watch your back because that Richard is not to be trusted. The show runs through March 9th and tickets are available here.
