Opening Today: Rose’s Luxury

There are some reviews I hate to write simply because I don’t want everyone to know about a great new place. Then, I won’t be able to get in as easily. But, word will get out soon enough, so I might as well share the news of the meal that has been lingering in my dreams since last weekend.

You’ve likely heard the growing anticipation of Barracks Row’s newest restaurant, Rose’s Luxury, over the last year. Last January we reported that they were running a Kickstarter campaign, and Young & Hungry covered the many pop-up dinners that chef and owner, Aaron Silverman, was holding in the area. Finally, this weekend, I got my chance to try it out at a preview night. The general recommendation is to order a small dish from each of the sections of the menu: cold; warm & grill; pasta; and “other goods.” There are also family style dishes to share with the table. Our party of four was treated to some of almost everything from the menu, which made for a wonderfully gluttonous time!

The thing that really stood out for me throughout the meal is how unique and different the approach of each dish was. There are a lot of excellent restaurants on Capitol Hill, but very few get experimental with dishes. That approach is not for all palates, but it’s something I love. I like my old standbys, but sometimes I want my meal to be an event; I want to be surprised and intrigued with every bite. And, that is what I got on Saturday.

A few highlights:

  • The Vietnamese pate with garlic bread
  • Crispy octopus with burnt lemon curry sauce
  • Popcorn soup with grilled lobster
  • Caramelized cauliflower with greek yogurt “& some other stuff”
  • Smoked brisket with horseradish and slaw
  • Olive oil cake with vanilla bean ice cream

Prices for small plates range from $11-$13 and the family style dishes are $24-$27. Portions are not huge but are incredibly tasty and different. The four of us were more than satisfied after sharing 12 small plates (so three per person) and were hardly able to finish the family-style dish of brisket.

As for the décor, you will not be reminded of any other Hill restaurant when you sit down in Rose’s. The front dining room has low ceilings and a cozy feel. But then, you walk past the open kitchen to the back dining room where the building’s dog leg has been filled in, giving the room a 2-story high ceiling with strings of garden lights stretching across. It has a warm and festive feel that made it easy to forget the time. Upstairs there is a large bar, which is perfect for relaxing while you wait for a table to open up, or for enjoying a drink after a great meal.

I also love that for every meal eaten at Rose’s Luxury, the restaurant will donate 25 cents to the WFP-USA to help feed a hungry child around the world. Every 25 cents provides a meal in school and take home rations for one child. So every time you have a meal, a child will have a meal!

Rose’s Luxury is located at 717 8th St. SE and is open for dinner Monday-Thursday from 5:30-10pm and Friday-Saturday from 5:30-11pm. Food and drinks are available at the bar until 1am. Rose’s Luxury will not be taking reservations at first, so plan accordingly.

Kudos to them for having a menu I don’t have to download as a PDF
