Happy Spring!

Did you set fire to anything last night to welcome this new season of growth and renewal? Me neither. What are we doing this weekend?

Today and tomorrow the Barracks Row event space Tabula Rasa (731 8th Street SE)  is hosting a trunk show for the Alloro Collection.  The collection designs fashionable clothes for women recovering from breast cancer. They aim to help women “recapture the joy. ”  They will donate 25% of all proceeds to breast cancer research and to underserved women. The collection will show from 11am to 8pm both days.

Friday night the Atlas teams up with former neighbors Theater Alliance to co-present Mark Bamuthi Joseph’s Word Becomes Flesh.  Joseph is one of the US’s vital voices in performance and arts education. Described as a “choreopoem” the piece explores tells the story of a young single father as he documents nine months of pregnancy through a series of performed letters to his unborn son through poetry, dance and live music incorporating the ritual, archtypes and hip cop culture.  Tickets are $25 in advance/$30 at the door and $15 for students. atlasarts.org. Head over to the 736 7th Street SE offices of Pendragwyn Productions to celebrate the launch of their 3rd annual Youth Film Festival. From 7-9pm they will be screening the trailer for the festival and attendees include this year’s filmmakers, PYFF alumni, judges and other cool kids.

Saturday is the inaugural DC Beer Festival at Nats Park. The festival brings together dozens of craft and international breweries, as well as DC’s best local breweries. The event will feature live music, beer and food pairing classes, some delicious beers, and plenty of surprises. Admission is $40 with a choice of two sessions, 1pm to 4pm and 6pm to 9pm. The Capitol Hill Montessori School is having a Yard Sale Saturday from 9am -2pm. Get there early to be sure to get your pick among the baby gear, bikes, household items and electronics on sale. The school is located at 215 G Street NE.

Sunday
 The Hill Center kicks off a new music series focused on traditional music called WorldPlay. The first concert, by Trio Sefardi, will focus on the music and traditions of Passover.  Trio Sefardi brings together Howard Bass (lute,guitar), Tina Chancey (bowed strings, vocals) and Susan Gaeta (vocals, guitar), who share a love of and a wide-ranging experience with Sephardic music. At 3:30 PM prior to the concert, performer Howard Bass will be interviewed about traditional Sephardic music by Stephen D. Winick, Ph.D., folklorist, writer, and folksinger. Dr. Winick is a folklorist at the American Folklife Center of the Library of Congress.  Tickets are $15 and can be purchased here.
