If warm Saturdays in the spring are made for trips to Eastern Market, than crisp fall days (even cold winter ones) are meant for outdoor ice skating rinks. No longer do we have to leave the Hill or drive to Virginia to take a turn around a well-known skating rink. Now, we can step out our front doors and walk to Capitol Hill’s ice skating rink at Canal Park.
The park, which is nestled between Eye and M Street on 2nd Street, SE, is accessible by foot, bike, Metro, car and even water taxi (for those Virginians clamoring to come to our side of the river). This is no ordinary rink. It features fountains, sculptures, a new restaurant, and a “meandering path” for skaters.
Meandering ice path!? I’m giddy just typing it!
This Friday, Mayor Vincent Gray will cut the ribbon on the ice skating rink and welcome visitors to the park. So sharpen your skates and practice your best “toe pick” because we are skating on the Hill this season.
