The To Do List

Well, my weekend is planned. In a weak moment on Monday, I found myself agreeing to run the Capitol Hill Classic.  After all, it might be the last one, and it’s good for me and  for a local school, so long as I’m cool with the idea that this post-baby year I might (ahem, will) walk quite a bit of it; after all, running is a sacred hobby.  And since I need to carb up to prepare properly, the H Street Bakes event at the Argonaut ties in nicely.  A group of local bakers hoping to soon open a co-op will be selling their staples and treats from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Does Gatorade go better with boules or baguettes?

To rest up, I might head over to the Atlas where tonight or Friday at 7 and 9 p.m. they’re screening The Upsetter, a film about the godfather of Reggae, Lee “Scratch” Perry.  Dreamboat and Academy Award-winning actor Benicio Del Toro narrates this exploration of the man behind Bob Marley and his legacy.

Film buffs have many options on Thursday. You can see award winning US and international films by 10 filmmakers at 10 different venues on the Mall and special guest presenters at each location.  Film Forward, a film showcase that’s a part of the the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, in partnership with the Sundance Institute and the Smithsonian, focuses on the role of cultural diplomacy through the work of filmmakers from all four corners of the globe. There will be Q&A sessions with the filmmakers as well as members of the President’s Committee such as Forest Whitaker, Kerry Washington, and Alfre Woodard.

To get your weekend started, make time to tango. On Friday from 6:30-9:30 p.m. stop by CHAW’s Dance Studio for the free tango práctica, and savor the chance to practice with dancers of all levels.

If you’re not running on Sunday, you could always run on Saturday.  Capitol Hill non-profit Bright Beginnings Inc., is dedicated to helping children of DC’s homeless families, and they’re holding a 5k that will circle Hains Point. All ages and abilities are welcome; register for the 8 a.m. race here.

Beginning to plan your summer beach time? Load up on good reads at either the Northeast or Southeast Branch Libraries. The “Friends” of each library, who work behind the scenes to support programming, are both holding used book sales.

Want to try your hand at printmanking?  Thanks to CHAW and the National Capital Bank, you can at ARTdays, on Saturday, from 10-11:00 a.m. in CHAW’s Art Studio. Make a reservation (202) 547-6839 for the free program and you’ll learn to make unique one of a kind prints using textures and recycled and found objects.

For a sip of Chardonnay and a concert and conversation with the cleverly named Left Hand Collective, start out your Saturday night at ARTdays Happy Hour: An Evening of Music and Art from 4-7 p.m. in CHAW’s Dance Studio and Gallery; http://www.thelefthandcollective.com.  Stick around from 5-7 p.m. when the Capitol Hill Art League opens its Second Annual Metro DC open juried exhibition “Coming Home/Lighting Out.”

On Sunday at the Rock and Roll Hotel from noon to 4 p.m., don’t miss the Food Experiments’ DC Taco Experiment: one in a series of amateur cook-offs that celebrate the home chef. Anyone can compete; anyone can attend; and a portion of the event’s proceeds will go towards the Capital Area Food Bank.

The bookish among us will want to head to Eastern Market’s North Hall on Sunday from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. for the Literary Hill Bookfest for author talks, discussions, children’s story time and book sales. Featured writers include historical fiction author Lou Bayard, featured on THIH a few months back; parenting columnist Marguerite Kelly; humorist Gene Weingarten and the Hill is Home’s own Monday Morning historian, Robert Pohl.  Chef Spike Mendelsohn will take the stage at 12:30 with his Good Stuff Cookbook ready to be signed, or perhaps to deflect locally ripened fruit.

    Hey Kate,
here’s something else for your to do list. Fire Nichole! She has turned this blog into her own personal soap box and loosing readership for you!

Really? This comment on our most hill lovefest column? I think it’s high time for the trolls to start their weekend early with something the folks in AA call an attitude adjustment. A stiff one.

  3. I got a message from IMGoph asking if I was the author of the first comment, which I was not. Imposter hillrat, if it’s not too much trouble would you mind choosing some other name when posting comments?

    Thanks,

  4. Just got wind of a bit more info about the H Street Bakes pop-up on Saturday.

Kim Moffatt, Executive Pastry Chef at Granville Moore’s, dreams of a bakery on H and together with fellow local chefs Faith Sleeper, Amber Yankulov and Tiffany Coln, is testing the waters on the Argonaut’s back patio. They want to find out if the products, demand and essentially if the delight and awe factor of non-pie choices can sustain a storefront. Let’s hope the rain stays away.

Any word on the kinds of baked goods we can look forward to?

Not quite on the Hill, but if the weather clears up I plan on heading down to the Yards park for their evening concert tonight. It’s the first one of the season, a blues group from Baltimore than sounds pretty good. And it’s always a good idea to do these events early in the season, before the heat/humidity/mosquitos come out.

    @world famous original Hill Rat…
not an imposter, had this name and e-mail for 15 years, sorry if it confuses you, but do not plan on retiring this nom de plume anytime soon.

@Kate, Really right back at you. Troll? Name calling is beneath you, and you will notice I did not refer to Miss Remmert by anything other than her given name, although several options come to mind. It seems that THIH has become a victim of the company it keeps.
