National Marathon Announces New Route

On Tuesday, National Marathon organizers finalized the route for Saturday’s race with some changes.  From what we understand, Homeland Security requested re-routing that has resulted in new pathways more consistent with what the race has used the three previous years.  The final race course has been updated on the National Marathon’s website.

Initially, the race was slated to start by following C Street, NE, from 15th to Stanton Park, but instead it will now start by following East Capitol to the Capitol complex.  Mile 11 brings the marathon and half marathon down H Street, NE, with a turn down 13th to C Street, NE, towards C Street and back to RFK for the finish of the half marathon.

For those who live proximate to the race course, check the map for updates to see how changes might impact you (and where you choose to park!)

It’s going to be a pain for any one wanting to move about that day. The fine print says police will let people cross streets at their discretion, but past experience has shown that to be not often.

Yeah, because the only way to get around the Hill is to drive.

Pro tip, Karl: don’t try to drive through a bunch of tired people. They won’t take kindly to it.

every year people whine about not being able to drive their cars to virginia on this ONE morning. me? i’m bummed because the re-route has taken the course away from my house, where i’d planned to sip bloody marys and yell encouragement to these suckers. oh, well…

As someone who has to schlep small kids to events across the Hill on Saturday morning, I find this boxing in frustrating. I wish the police would pick a handful of intersections on the Hill and mark them as primary cross points with a priority of keeping the traffic moving.

National Marathon day is always a great day concentrate on yard work.

Yeah, because the only place to have a marathon is on the Hill.

  7. CAW says:

Yep, this calls for bloody marys and omlettes in the front yard. Good luck runners!

  8. MJ says:

If I lived on East Capitol, I would throw a party in my front yard. Anyone gonna step up?!

  9. David Holmes says:

The full Marathon continues back down East Capitol westbound for a second time.

The street is closed from 6:45 until after 11 am. There will be cross-routes but they can only be used when there are no runners present. Only soon after the first westbound surge of runners passes off the Hill (about 7:20 or so) will police be able to help with north-south crossings.

If you must leave the Hill to get to the airports, start a trip, get to childrens’ sports events and parties, or get to the doctor, you should head to the entrance to I395 at 3rd and D NW (by the city courts and offices).

Thanks David for the useful information.

I’m running the full marathon for the third year. It’s a great event showcasing our amazing neighborhood as well as other parts of DC including East of the Anacostia.

Why not try it? or the half or the relay?, or try walking, or try bicycling (I do it everyday to work–rain, snow or shine, it’s not that hard), try bike share, try the bus, or get on metro.

    Get out of your cars.

I don’t understand why some dislike the Marathon so much… sure, it’s a little inconvenient for a few hours, but you can make contingency plans, and it’s a great event, and it brings good activity to the neighborhood! Yard work, Bloody Marys, and/or cheering on runners – sounds like a great idea.

the marathon runs through the whole city, not just the hill. it’s a great way for people to see parts of town they’ve never been to.

good luck, mark! i will run a marathon again once my toddler allows me time to train 🙂
