Press Release from Tommy Wells re Hine Bid goes to Stanton-EastBanc

Councilmember Wells Joins Mayor Fenty to Announce Redevelopment Team of Former Hine Jr. High School Site

Calls for Continued Community Process as Designs Move Forward

(Washington, DC) – This morning, Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells joined Mayor Adrian Fenty, Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development Valerie Santos, ANC Commissioners and others to announce the selection of Stanton-EastBanc as the development team for the 3.5-acre former Hine Jr. High School site adjacent to Eastern Market. The Stanton-EastBanc proposal includes the redevelopment of the former school site into a mix of housing, retail and office space.

“I’m excited about the plans for this site, located in the heart of Capitol Hill, to preserve the character of the historic Eastern Market, yet also create new family housing and retail that supports the community.” Wells added, “Reopening C Street with a plan to maintain the weekend flea market, creating connections to Metro and alternative transportation, and adding below ground parking to reduce the parking pressures felt in the neighborhood, further adds to the potential on the former Hine site. I’m also thrilled that the Shakespeare Theatre Company is a part of the proposal.”

Wells also called on the city’s Office of Planning to quickly hold a community meeting with the neighborhood and the selected development team as they move forward fine-tuning their plans.

“It is important that Stanton-EastBanc and the city move quickly to continue seeking community input on this site,” added Wells.

Wells hosted a series of neighborhood meetings last year about the community’s shared vision for redevelopment of the Hine Jr. High site. Foremost among the priorities was a commitment to maintaining the character and style of the historic neighborhood, low-density housing adjacent to existing residences, and an appropriate mix of uses on the site. The planning meetings led to a series of recommendations that were included in city’s solicitation for bids and were reflected in most of the development proposals.

Added Wells, “Today’s selection by the Mayor is another step in what will continue to be a community driven process to ensure the redevelopment of the site fits the character and needs of the Capitol Hill and Eastern Market neighborhood.”

After the agreement with the city is finalized, the redevelopment team will seek zoning changes for the site and engage the Advisory Neighborhood Commission and community in a Planned Unit Development (PUD) process.
